Bottom Line Up Front
Don’t lose your best hunting footage the way I did. The GoPro 10 Hero Black will overheat when set to high performance, ie high resolution and high frame rates (frame per second-fps).
Background
I lost one of the best hunting videos of the year because my GoPro Hero 10 Black overheated and I couldn’t cool it down enough to get any decent length of video.
Like most hunters when I film a hunt I turn on my GoPro and leave it running for the entire hunt. In fact, I use a pass through to connect a USB to an external battery that I carry in my pocket so I can hunt all day and never have to change out the battery. And, yes, my SD card has 256 Gig so it will last just short of 8 hours.
I had been hunting with my GoPro 10 Hero Black 10 and doing well enough with it. I videoed in 5.3K and 30 fps. This gave me the resolution I needed for the cropped close ups that I like in my videos, youtube.com/simplehunts.
Then I went on my annual duck hunt to Oregon. To improve the video quality I increased the fps to 60 fps so the slow motion would smooth out.
Discussion
At 5.3K and 60 fps, my GoPro overheated after about 15 minutes. I let it cool down and then turned it on again. This time it only lasted 10 minutes. Obviously something was awry. But, I was in a duck blind and wasn’t about to troubleshoot my GoPro. I lost some great footage.
That night I poked around YouTube and came across this great video by David Manning (who I watch on occasion for video gear recommendations). He does a series of tests on GoPros to identify how quickly they will overheat under different settings and conditions.
GoPro Response to Overheating
GoPro put out an update that will limit some of the settings so it won’t overheat as much under most circumstances for average users. But this is the catch, GoPro’s internal data shows that 75% of users’ video clips are under 1 minute and 10 seconds, so overheating really isn’t considered a problem from GoPro's point of view.
Conclusion
Don’t lose video footage from your once in a lifetime hunt. If your GoPro overheats. Dial back either the resolution of fps and capture that once in a lifetime hunt on video so you can enjoy it for the rest of your life.
Enjoy and God Bless,
Dan
