Flushed and Furious: Hunting Quail Across the Best States in America

Ah, the humble quail. Quail hunting can offer environments that vary from Alabama forests to Idaho Rocky Mountains. Quail hunting is a primal dance, a symphony of shotgun blasts and pointing dogs, all set against the backdrop of golden fields and crisp autumn air. Although I am primarily a pheasant hunter, chasing quail can offer a jolt to the adrenal glands. But where, oh where, does one find the best quail hunting grounds in this vast land of ours? Worry not, fellow bird dogs lovers, for I've flushed out the top contenders:

Quail
Quail hunting is best when it is shared with a great hunting bird dog.

Central Champions:

  • Kansas: Arguably the best state for hunting bobwhite quail because of the ideal habitat and the liberal bag limits. The last I saw was a limit of eight per day and 32 in possession. Head south-central for prime coveys, especially around the Flint Hills. The rolling terrain makes it just about necessary for you to bring your pointer.

  • Oklahoma: Kansas' western neighbor is another bobwhite bonanza. From the Black Kettle National Grasslands to the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area, Oklahoma offers diverse landscapes and ample opportunities to fill your bag. Lately, it has been the western part of the state that has been producing the best hunting where you will run into scaled quail rather than bobwhite in the eastern part of the state.

  • Nebraska: Don't underestimate the Cornhusker State! Nebraska's quail populations are on the rise, particularly in the Sandhills region. Public hunting land abounds, but don't miss out on guided hunts on private ranches for a truly VIP experience.

Southern Sovereigns:

  • Georgia: While bobwhites still reign supreme, Georgia is also home to the elusive eastern wild turkey. The rolling hills and pine forests of south Georgia offer stunning scenery and challenging hunts. Quail numbers fluctuate, so research local reports before heading out.

  • Alabama: Alabama's Black Belt region is a quail hunter's paradise. Well-managed public lands like Choccolocco WMA and Freedom Hills WMA ensure consistent populations and excellent opportunities for both novice and seasoned hunters. I've hunted quail at Chattokee Lodge in Alabama. If you want to treat yourself to some pampering try a deer hunt at Chattokee Lodge.

  • Texas: The Lone Star State boasts a diverse quail landscape, from the semi-arid plains of West Texas to the lush Hill Country. Scaled quail dominate the west, while bobwhites thrive in the east. Don't forget your chaps and cowboy hat – Texas quail hunting is an experience in itself!

Western Wonders:

  • Arizona: Venture beyond the cacti and discover the hidden gem of Arizona quail hunting. Mearns' and scaled quail thrive in the state's diverse habitats, from oak-grassland savannahs to juniper-studded mesas. Southern Arizona, near the Mexican border, is a particularly hot spot.

  • Idaho: Idaho's vast public lands offer ample opportunities for quail hunting, especially in the southwest and Magic Valley regions. Be prepared for varied terrain and hunts that will challen your lung capacity. But the rewards of chasing quail and perhaps a chukar or two in the slopes of the Rockies are unparalleled.

  • Washington: Quail hunting in Washington might surprise you, but the state's southeastern corner, near Idaho, holds hidden treasures. The Palouse region, with its rolling hills and patchwork farms, is home to healthy populations of California quail. You might want to bring some rain gear. The Pacific Northwest fall and winter can bring in a shower or two.

  • New Mexico: I've also had friends have successful quail hunts in New Mexico, specifically in the Clovis region although I haven't heard about quail in New Mexico recently. So check Quail Forever's quail hunting forcast before planning a New Mexico quail hunting trip.

Beyond the Borders:

If you want to take your quail chase across the border consider:

  • Mexico: Northern Mexico is a quail hunter's paradise, with abundant scaled quail and breathtaking landscapes. Just be sure to research hunting regulations and permits before heading south.

  • Argentina: Experience the thrill of hunting Argentina's tinamous, flightless birds related to quail. The pampas grasslands offer a unique and challenging hunting experience.

Remember, responsible hunting is crucial for the future of this beloved sport. Always:

  • Respect hunting regulations and bag limits.

  • Use non-toxic shot to protect the environment. I switched to non-toxic when my daughter munched a lead pellet buried in a pheasant breast.

  • Support habitat conservation efforts. Consider joining Pheasants Forever or Quail Forever. (I am a lifetime member of Pheasants Forever.)

  • Treat fellow hunters and landowners with courtesy.

So, grab your shotgun, lace up your boots, and let the chase begin! With a little planning and the right destination, your next quail hunt is sure to be flush with excitement.

Happy hunting!
